Dungeon Masters Guide Rules on Treasure

The DMG is a bit vague on the subject of treasure and this is my interpretation of the rules.

Individual Treasure. So, the player can find treasure in a few different ways. Firstly there is individual treasure. This is the treasure a creature might be carrying on their person, like coins in their pockets.

Treasure Hoard. This is the treasure amassed by multiple creatures or maybe one strong one. A bandit might have a small amout of individual treasure, but a bandit camp might have a larger hoard. So depending on what the players are facing, they might find different sizes of treasure.

Magic Items. The last kind of treasure are magic items. These are categorized in treasure themes. Now, I interpret the DMG as saying that if the creature has a treasure theme, you roll on the treasure hoard table. This however makes no sence to me since a lot of creatures have a treasure theme but are not powerful enough to have a hoard. For example, on a bandit it says "Treasure: Any". And on Monster Treasure Preferences it says: Any. The monster has a treasure hoard". But a 1/8 CR bandit is not going to have a hoard, realistically. What I did was include a button that gives you the option to roll the treasure as a hoard or not.

The rest is pretty straight forward. The size is determined by the CR of the creature and the level of the players. Then you look at the tables and roll for treasure. This is an example of how the pipeline can look like:

Berserker - Treasure: Armaments, Individual

CR Treasure Player lvl Magic Items Item's Rarity - d100 Roll on Armament table
2 Individual
3d6 (10) GP

Hoard
2d4 × 100 (500) GP

35-70 Rare
71-93 Very Rare
94-00 Legendary
1d100 on the rarity of the item
a number of times = how many
Magic Items you rolled.
For the complete list of items,
see DMG page 326.
